Fundraising

This Fundraising Policy outlines the principles, guidelines, and responsibilities that govern our fundraising activities to ensure alignment with our mission and values.

1. Introduction

Giving Back Generation (“GBG”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) is committed to the highest standards of ethical, responsible, and transparent fundraising. We seek to uphold the trust and confidence of our donors, beneficiaries, partners, and the wider public in all our fundraising activities.
This policy sets out the principles, standards, and responsibilities that govern fundraising by GBG, ensuring full alignment with our charitable mission, legal obligations, and the guidance of the Charity Commission and the Fundraising Regulator.

2. Objectives of the Policy

This policy aims to:

  • Establish clear ethical guidelines for all GBG fundraising activities.
  • Ensure transparency, accountability, and good governance in the solicitation and use of donations.
  • Protect the rights, privacy, and wishes of donors and supporters.
  • Promote full compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and sector standards (including the Charity Commission’s CC20 guidance and the Code of Fundraising Practice).
  • Safeguard the wellbeing of all beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, and members of the public involved in or affected by our fundraising.

3. Principles of Fundraising

GBG adheres to the following core principles:

  • Transparency: Clearly communicate our mission, fundraising aims, and the intended use of donated funds. Provide honest, accessible information about our activities and results.
  • Ethical Conduct: Never use deceptive, misleading, or high-pressure tactics. All fundraising is undertaken with respect, integrity, and honesty.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all relevant legislation, Charity Commission guidance, and the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice.
  • Value for Money: Carefully plan, monitor, and justify the costs of all fundraising activities and events, ensuring costs do not outweigh or become unreasonably disproportionate to the charitable funds raised, in line with Charity Commission expectations.
  • Safeguarding: Ensure fundraising activities do not put at risk the safety or wellbeing of beneficiaries, donors, staff, volunteers, or the public. All fundraising must comply with GBG’s safeguarding policy and Charity Commission safeguarding guidance.
  • Respect for Donors: Treat all donors with respect and gratitude, protect their data, and honour their wishes.

4. Types of Fundraising Activities

GBG may undertake, or authorise, the following fundraising activities:

  • Donations: One-off or recurring gifts from individuals, companies, or organisations.
  • Events: Fundraising events (e.g., galas, community events, sponsored challenges).
  • Campaigns: Online or offline appeals, including crowdfunding and peer-to-peer fundraising.
  • Merchandise Sales: Selling goods to support our charitable aims.
  • Legacy Giving: Gifts in wills and other planned giving.
  • Grant Applications: Requests for funding from trusts, foundations, and statutory sources.
  • Third-Party Fundraisers: Activities led by supporters on GBG’s behalf, subject to appropriate due diligence and oversight.

All fundraising must be approved and monitored by GBG’s trustees and senior management to ensure alignment with this policy and GBG’s charitable objectives.

5. Donor Rights and Protections

GBG is committed to the following donor rights:

  • Transparency: Donors will receive clear information about how their donation will be used, and can request additional information at any time.
  • Privacy: Donor data will be protected in line with the UK GDPR and our Data Protection Policy. We do not share or sell donor information.
  • Acknowledgement: All donations will be acknowledged promptly, unless anonymity is requested.
  • Choice: Donors can opt out of fundraising communications at any time and can specify how they wish to be contacted.
  • Directed Giving: Donor preferences or restrictions on use of funds will be honoured wherever possible, so long as they align with GBG’s mission and operational capacity.
  • Complaints: Donors and the public can raise concerns or complaints about any fundraising activity via contact@givingbackgeneration.org.uk. All complaints will be handled promptly, fairly, and transparently, with escalation to the Fundraising Regulator or Charity Commission if needed.

6. Use of Funds

  • All funds raised by or for GBG will be used solely to further our charitable objects.
  • Where donations are restricted for specific purposes, they will only be used for those purposes.
  • The allocation of unrestricted funds will be determined by the trustees according to the greatest needs and priorities of GBG’s mission.
  • Detailed accounts of funds raised, spent, and outcomes achieved will be published in biannual and annual transparency reports on our website.

7. Fundraising Costs and Financial Oversight

  • Trustees and staff must ensure that all fundraising events and activities are planned with careful consideration of costs and projected income.
  • Costs must never outweigh, or be unreasonably disproportionate to, the charitable funds raised.
  • All expenditure, returns, and performance will be regularly reviewed by trustees, and must be justifiable to the Charity Commission, donors, and the public.
  • GBG does not pay commission to fundraisers or third parties unless fully compliant with legal and ethical standards, and clearly disclosed to donors.

8. Restrictions and Ethical Considerations

  • GBG will decline donations or support that could compromise our mission, values, independence, or reputation.
  • No high-pressure, coercive, or exploitative fundraising methods are permitted.
  • Third-party fundraisers may only act for GBG with prior approval and written agreement; all activity will be monitored for compliance.
  • Safeguarding is paramount: all fundraising, especially that involving children, young people, or vulnerable adults, must adhere to our safeguarding and risk management policies.

9. Recognition and Acknowledgement

  • Donors and fundraisers may be recognised in transparency reports, event materials, or online, unless they request anonymity.
  • Major donors may be offered additional recognition (such as named projects), subject to written agreement and Charity Commission rules.

10. Monitoring, Reporting, and Accountability

  • Fundraising activities and outcomes will be reviewed regularly by trustees and management.
  • All fundraising performance, including income, costs, and impact, will be included in our biannual transparency reports and annual statutory filings.
  • The effectiveness and compliance of this policy will be reviewed annually or in response to changes in law, guidance, or sector standards.
