1. Introduction
Welcome to Giving Back Generation (“GBG”, “we”, “our”, or “us”)! Volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission to empower communities and create positive, lasting change. This handbook sets out your role, responsibilities, and what you can expect from us as a GBG volunteer. Thank you for your dedication and commitment.
2. Who Can Volunteer?
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds who:
- Are at least 16 years old. (Volunteers working with children or vulnerable people must meet extra safeguarding requirements.)
- Support GBG’s vision and values.
- Are willing to follow our policies and Code of Conduct.
- Complete our application and onboarding process, including background checks (DBS or other) if required by the role.
3. Volunteer Responsibilities
As a GBG volunteer, you are expected to:
- Uphold GBG’s values—empowerment, respect, inclusivity, and integrity.
- Complete assigned tasks and projects to the best of your ability.
- Safeguard the welfare of all beneficiaries, especially children and vulnerable adults, and follow our safeguarding policies at all times.
- Comply with all GBG policies, including those on data protection, health and safety, and equality.
- Work collaboratively with fellow volunteers, staff, and trustees.
- Act as a positive ambassador for GBG at all times, both in-person and online.
4. Duties and Expectations
We ask all volunteers to:
- Attend induction and any role-specific training.
- Be punctual and reliable—let your supervisor know as soon as possible if you cannot attend or complete a commitment.
- Maintain confidentiality about any sensitive information you encounter.
- Follow all safeguarding procedures, reporting any concerns immediately to your supervisor or our safeguarding lead (see safeguarding policy).
- Provide feedback to help us improve our work and volunteer experience.
5. Volunteer Roles
You might help out with:
- Community outreach, mentoring, or engagement activities.
- Supporting events and fundraising, always in line with our Fundraising Policy.
- Producing handmade items or supporting our online store.
- Educational sessions or group work with young people (with relevant vetting/training).
- Admin support or project coordination.
All roles are designed to maximise public benefit and reflect our charitable aims.
6. Safeguarding, Safety, and Wellbeing
- GBG is committed to the highest standards of safeguarding and expects all volunteers to read and follow our safeguarding policies and Charity Commission guidance.
- If you are working with children or vulnerable adults, you must complete safeguarding training and any necessary background checks before starting.
- Your health, safety, and wellbeing are our priority. We will:
- Provide a safe working environment and any personal protective equipment needed.
- Make sure you have clear guidance on health and safety practices for your role.
- Offer access to support or supervision if you experience difficulties during your volunteering.
- Volunteers must report any safeguarding or safety concern—no matter how small—immediately.
7. Code of Conduct for Volunteers
All volunteers must:
- Act with integrity, honesty, and professionalism.
- Treat all beneficiaries, colleagues, and members of the public with respect and fairness.
- Avoid and declare any conflicts of interest.
- Safeguard confidential information and protect the privacy and dignity of everyone involved.
- Comply with GBG’s policies on health and safety, safeguarding, inclusivity, and data protection.
- Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from your role.
8. Recognition and Support
We value and appreciate every volunteer. You will receive:
- Certificates or awards to recognise exceptional service.
- Opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and relevant training.
- Reimbursement for reasonable, pre-approved expenses related to volunteering (in line with our expenses policy).
9. Getting Involved and Progression
- Volunteers are encouraged to join working groups, attend events, and represent GBG in the community.
- After six months of active volunteering, you may apply to become a Trustee. (Application details are available from your supervisor or members@givingbackgeneration.org.uk.)
10. Ending or Pausing Your Volunteering
- You can resign at any time—please let your supervisor know in writing and give as much notice as possible.
- GBG reserves the right to end a volunteer placement if:
- You breach our Code of Conduct or policies.
- You are unable to fulfil your role after reasonable adjustments/support.
- Your actions are incompatible with GBG’s mission or values.
- We will always aim to handle endings with fairness and respect.
