Zero-Tolerance & Inclusivity

Explore Giving Back Generation's Zero Tolerance and Inclusivity Policy. Learn how we promote diversity, equality, and a safe environment for all participants.

1. Introduction

Giving Back Generation (“GBG”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) is committed to creating and maintaining a culture of inclusivity, equality, and respect. We have a strict zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination, harassment, bullying, or inequitable treatment—whether direct or indirect, verbal or non-verbal.
This policy sets out our expectations and standards for all staff, trustees, volunteers, members, beneficiaries, and visitors, ensuring that everyone involved in our charity feels safe, valued, and able to participate fully in our work.

2. Scope of the Policy

This policy applies to:

  • All GBG activities, events, projects, premises (including digital/online spaces), and relationships.
  • All protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010: race, ethnicity, colour, nationality, religion or belief, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, pregnancy/maternity, marriage/civil partnership, or any other characteristic that could be the basis for discrimination.
  • All forms of engagement, including recruitment, service delivery, volunteering, and membership.

3. Zero-Tolerance Statement

GBG will not tolerate, condone, or ignore:

  • Any form of discrimination, harassment, bullying, or victimisation, including microaggressions, hate speech, or stereotyping.
  • Offensive, degrading, or exclusionary language or behaviour—whether in person, in writing, or online.
  • Retaliation or disadvantage against any individual who raises or reports concerns of discrimination, harassment, or bullying.

Any breach of this policy will result in immediate investigation, and could lead to disciplinary action, exclusion from GBG activities, or termination of employment/volunteer status.

4. Our Commitment to Inclusivity

GBG is dedicated to:

  • Actively promoting diversity and inclusion in all our operations, communications, and services.
  • Providing equal opportunities in recruitment, employment, volunteering, leadership, and participation, ensuring that all decisions are based on merit, experience, and suitability, not background or status.
  • Ensuring our programmes and communications are accessible and welcoming, including providing reasonable adjustments for disabled individuals or those with specific needs.
  • Continually reviewing our practices to embed inclusivity at every level, learning from feedback and new guidance.

5. Reporting and Addressing Incidents

5.1 How to Report

Anyone who experiences or witnesses discrimination, harassment, or bullying, or believes this policy has been breached, should:

  • Report the incident promptly to their supervisor, project lead, or any trustee.
  • Email GBG confidentially at contact@givingbackgeneration.org.uk.
  • Use our anonymous reporting channel if they prefer (details available on request).

5.2 Investigation Process

  • All reports will be treated seriously, confidentially, and investigated promptly by a trained, impartial person.
  • Investigations will respect the rights and dignity of everyone involved, including the presumption of innocence until facts are established.
  • Outcomes may include mediation, restorative action, mandatory training, or (in serious cases) removal or barring from GBG activities.

Retaliation against anyone who makes a complaint or participates in an investigation is strictly prohibited.

6. Roles and Responsibilities

6.1 Trustees and Management

  • Lead by example in modelling inclusive behaviour and challenging discrimination.
  • Ensure this policy is embedded in all GBG practices and that regular training is provided.
  • Oversee the reporting, investigation, and resolution of any incidents or breaches.

6.2 Staff and Volunteers

  • Treat all individuals with respect, dignity, and fairness at all times.
  • Promote an inclusive environment, be alert to discrimination, and challenge inappropriate behaviour.
  • Report concerns promptly and support those affected.

7. Inclusivity in Programmes and Services

GBG will:

  • Design and deliver programmes that reflect and celebrate the diversity of our communities.
  • Ensure all services are accessible (e.g. step-free access, large print, alternative languages), and make reasonable adjustments wherever required.
  • Seek and act on feedback from beneficiaries, partners, and the public to improve our inclusivity.

8. Monitoring, Feedback, and Review

  • GBG regularly monitors the effectiveness of this policy through feedback, incident reporting, and periodic audits.
  • This policy will be reviewed at least annually, or sooner if there is a significant change in law, Charity Commission guidance, or organisational practice.
  • All staff, volunteers, and stakeholders will be informed of any updates.
